The mayor of CDMX will seek the presidential candidacy

Claudia Sheinbaum

The head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Monday (06.12.2023) that she will resign next Friday to seek candidacy for the Presidency in the 2024 elections of the ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

“Today I want to inform you that I have made the decision to separate myself from office permanently on June 16 of this (year) in order to become the first woman in the history of Mexico to lead the destinies of the nation “, the president, considered the favorite, expressed in a message to the media.

The announcement comes after Morena, founded by current Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Sunday that on September 6 it will reveal who will be the party’s candidate after opinion polls that will be held from August 28 to September 3.

The mayoress of the capital highlighted her achievements in five years in office

Sheinbaum explained that, although he had initially expressed that he would not resign from his post, following the rules imposed by the party for the presidential candidate election process, he decided to leave his post. “I understand that above all else is the transformation project and therefore I will respect everything that was approved yesterday (Sunday) by the National Council,” he emphasized.

The president exalted what has been achieved in just over five years as head of Mexico City, where she highlighted the basic education scholarships, maintenance and investment in the subway, as well as the construction of seven high schools, two universities and two new hospitals. In addition, she highlighted achievements in mobility with investment in public transport and care for women victims of violence.

Sheinbaum is not without controversy

During his government, Sheinbaum experienced various controversies, such as the accident that occurred on metro line 12 in May 2021, which left 27 dead and hundreds injured, and the lack of care for those affected by the 2017 earthquakes that left housing hundreds of families in the south of the city.

Next Monday the political tours of the country will begin with each of the four candidates of the party: Sheinbaum, the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard; the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, and the leader of Morena in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal.
