Afghanistan is “the most repressive country in the world” for women, denounces the UN

Afghanistan Women Taliban

The UN called on the Taliban this Wednesday (03.08.2023) to end “immediately” the “draconian restrictions” they impose on women in Afghanistan, in a message on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

“Under the rule of the Taliban, Afghanistan continues to be the most repressive country in the world with regard to women’s rights,” said Roza Otunbayeva, director of the UN assistance mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), in a statement.

“It has been heartbreaking to witness your methodical, deliberate and systematic efforts to keep Afghan women and girls out of the public sphere,” she added.

Since coming to power in August 2021, the Taliban have multiplied restrictions on women. For example, they were banned from the university and cannot access secondary education.

They also cannot travel without the company of a male relative and must cover up when leaving home. In November, they were denied access to parks, gardens, gyms and public toilets.
